Why Is My AC Blowing Hot Air?

There are few things more annoying than walking into your home expecting a blast of cool air, only to find the vents are pushing out a warm breeze. When your AC is blowing hot air, your home can turn into an oven faster than you can find the remote.

The good news? An air conditioner often blows warm air for a few very common (and fixable) reasons. Before you assume you need a major AC repair, take five minutes to rule out these common human error issues. These solve a surprising number of service calls.

• Thermostat Settings: It sounds simple, but double-check that the thermostat is actually set to "Cool" and not "Heat." Also, ensure the setpoint is at least 3–5 degrees below the current room temperature.
• The Fan Setting: Change your fan setting from "On" to "Auto." When the fan is "On," it runs 24/7—even when the cooling system isn't actually chilling the air. This can result in warm air circulating through the house between cooling cycles.
• Check the Power: Look at your circuit breaker panel. If the breaker for the outdoor unit has tripped, the indoor fan will still blow, but it will only be moving unconditioned indoor air.
• Batteries: If your thermostat screen is blank or dim, the AC system might not be receiving the signal to start cooling.

Proper airflow is the cornerstone of your air conditioning system. If the cold air can’t move, the heat won’t leave. A dirty or clogged air filter can choke airflow, raise temps, and even contribute to frozen evaporator coils. Ice on the indoor unit or copper pipes leading outside is a sign of frozen evaporator coils. Frozen coils can affect your cooling performance and may cause warm air to come from the vents.

Turn the system off to let the ice melt, replace the air filter, and clear any buildup from your return vents. Give it an hour, then turn it back on.

The outdoor unit must release heat. When condenser coils are packed with dirt, or a capacitor is failing, the condenser fan may not spin, you may hear buzzing, or the system may short-cycle. As a result, you will feel warm air inside.

Shut off the power, clear the area around the condenser unit, and gently rinse the coils from the inside out with a garden hose. Avoid using a pressure washer. If these fixes don’t work, contact an HVAC professional because electrical components and AC compressor issues require a licensed technician.

If the air coming from your vents slowly gets warmer and warmer, suspect low refrigerant levels. You might notice longer run times, higher bills, ice on the refrigerant line, or frozen evaporator coils. Another symptom can be a faint hiss, which can point to a refrigerant leak.

Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" like gas in a car. If it's low, there is a leak that needs to be repaired and recharged. A recharge is a little outside the DIY scope, so be sure to connect with a licensed HVAC technician to get your system back in working order.

DIY troubleshooting is great for the basics, but some electrical issues or mechanical failures are stop signs for homeowners. You should call for AC repair immediately if:

• The Breaker Keeps Tripping: Don't keep flipping it back; this indicates a serious electrical issue, possibly a short, a failing compressor, or an overloaded circuit.
• You Smell Burning: A burning odor from the vents usually points to a failing compressor or blower motor.
• Ice Returns Quickly: If you’ve changed the filter and the frozen evaporator coils return, you likely have a refrigerant leak.
• Water Leaks: If you see water pooling around the unit, you probably have a clogged drain line or a cracked condensate pan.
